A Northwest match fishing group is looking to get more female anglers into the sport through a series of competitive league matches.

Girls Gone Fishing was created to offer ladies and girls the chance to fish together, make new friendships and develop their skills – with the opportunity to benefit from group or one and one coaching.

The group currently runs eight matches from March through to October, with the top six of those matches contributing to their own league.

Organiser Emma Jenks of the Angling Trust is hoping that a similar scheme can be replicated across the country…

“I would love to see a Girls Gone Fishing group in each region where possible,” she said.

“That would hopefully include all the disciplines of angling, allowing us to create new friendships, so if we want to go and learn about sea, coarse, game or carp fishing then we can.”

The drive is part of there Trust's 'We Fish As One' campaign

Emma is also hopeful that if more regions adopt a similar structure, the competition element could become national.

“It would be great to see other regions across the UK able to support us in organising and managing a group like we have in the Northwest at the moment,” she says.

“If we are able to develop more regional groups, we can then look to organise an ‘All Winners Final’ or a national match, whereby we fish as individuals and regional teams.”

Emma will be holding a Teams meeting on the 20th of April where anyone interested or keen to get involved can find out more.

“I recommend that you come along and see what the plans are, ask questions and share ideas,” she says.

“The more ladies and girls that we have involved, the more of a difference we can make, and really make this project work together.”
