Giant Hampshire Avon chub

8lb beast takes meat hookbait

Giant Hampshire Avon chub

HAVING studied the weather forecast, river levels and water temperature, Alex Warren decided conditions would be right for targeting chub, and later that day he slipped his net under this 8lb specimen from a local stretch of the Hampshire Avon.

He’d worked four swims in succession after lightly baiting them, and settled into the most likely option when the light began to fade.

Fishing a Spam hookbait below a blockend feeder loaded with mashed Spam and fishmeal base mix, he cast to a crease formed by fallen trees.

After a few finicky indications on the tip, he had a positive bite that heralded the start of an intense battle as the fish tried to reach the sunken tree roots downstream. It beat Alex’s previous PB by 2oz
