Fishing initiatives looking to boost junior participation

The drive to entice fresh blood into the sport is hitting new heights this year, with over 400 events taking place across England and Wales. It is no secret that numbers of new anglers entering the sport, especially younger anglers, has been dwindling over recent years so these types of events are always welcomed by the community.

Let’s Fish! is a Canal and Rivers Trust initiative that’s been credited with boosting the number of young anglers over recent seasons. Under the initiative, introductory sessions giving newcomers the chance to catch their first fish are taking place on club waters right across the country.

We spoke to said John Ellis of the CRT and he told us what he hopes the initiative will be able to provide:

“The programme hosts many events within walking distance of local communities in places where everyone, regardless of background or ability, can take part, with all the equipment provided.”

“We’re proud that these events have introduced thousands of young people to angling and the hope is that we can continue to keep bringing new anglers into the sport.”
