It took a few days of catching nothing but bream and chub on the River Trent before Ian Green connected with this giant 17lb barbel.

“Initially, I thought I’d hooked a carp," he told us.

"I couldn’t get the fish up off the bottom, it spent 10 minutes going up and down the river.

"I hadn’t caught a glimpse of it, when suddenly it ripped out into the main flow.

"It made three more powerful runs before revealing itself as this immense barbel!

"When I netted it I instantly knew it had beaten my old 15lb 2oz PB.

“It scaled 17lb exactly and topped a session in which I also landed 11 bream and three chub.”
