THIS summer, current Drennan Cup holder Simon Daley has been obsessed with eels, and after a run of blanks, he landed this 6lb 1oz personal best.
Concentrating on southern gravel pits, he’d struggled after landing a fish of 5lb 7oz a few months back, but the challenge of catching these notoriously tricky fish kept him going.
With perfect low pressure and rainy conditions rolling in last weekend, Simon moved to a new area he fancied and, following advice from a mate, used an ultra-low- resistance Dyson Rig with a lobworm hookbait fished over a pint of dead maggots.
He presented this just over the marginal shelf, two rodlengths out, in 13ft of water. Simon said that the strength of the eels is ‘unbelievable’, so he uses a 50lb braided hooklink and a size 6 barbless hook.
