On a recent trip to the lower River Thames, Sam Taylor and his friend Adam targeted perch with lures. They had caught little of any size, but when they found a large shoal of small ‘wasps’ they decided to slowly work the lures around them in the hope that there might be a few bigger ones sitting off the back of the shoal.
Casting along a drop-off, Sam felt a sudden whack on the rod-tip as his soft plastic crayfish imitation lure was snapped up. Despite catching a few small pike that day, Sam was confident he’d hooked his intended species – heavy headshakes giving the game away.
With the drag of his reel ticking, Sam slowly eased the perch to the surface. At 4lb 7oz, it’s his UK PB and a fish that will take some beating, although he’s determined to try over the next few months!
