TWO bites just after first light resulted in a magnificent chub brace scaling 7lb 10oz and 7lb 15oz for Pete Cranstoun.

Fishing upstream to a prebaited spot behind a fallen tree on a southern river, the 73-year-old Newbury, Berkshire, angler took both fish on link-legered casters, presented over several baitdroppers full of hookbait samples and hemp.

“I was upstreaming, using just 4lb mainline and a size 16 hook,” he said.

“After setting the hook it was just a case of keeping a tight line on the fish to keep them clear of trouble.

“I’ve caught chub to 8lb 5oz in the past, but this is my best brace. I’d like to dedicate the catch to my dear departed friends Bob Buteaux and Len Arbery, who both passed away last year,” added Pete.
