Carper nets massive tench

THIS enormous tench, weighing 12lb, is one of the biggest reported this season – but the captor almost put the fish straight back without weighing it.

Taylor O’Brien was targeting the carp in Ellis Water, Middlesex, when his Krill wafter was picked up by the specimen tinca. Not being his target species, he normally returns them unweighed, but on this occasion a friend persuaded him to do otherwise.

“To be honest, I never realised how special it was, even when it tipped the scales at 12lb,” he told us. “I’ve put fish back that I believe were even bigger!”

After doing a little research into the venue, Taylor said he now realised why the tench in Ellis are so exceptional.

“The lake opposite, Sheepwalk, is where Darren Ward’s 15lb 3oz British record tench was caught, so there’s the potential for real monsters in here. I now realise my mistake in putting the other one back!”
