SPECIMEN eels are ranked as one of Britain’s most challenging fish to catch, so you can imagine Devon angler Peter Lilley’s surprise when he landed this 7lb 3oz giant on a boilie!
Fishing Beatties Lake at the prolific Stafford Moor complex, Peter was targeting carp when he had a twitchy take on his snowman hookbait presentation.
He was fishing in open water and had fed a few boilies over his spots as free offerings before getting the take.
“I thought it was just a line bite or a bream at first, but as I hit into it I could feel the power of this eel,” he told us.
“I was in shock when I saw and weighed it – I doubt I’ll ever see an eel that size again in freshwater. I know they’re not everyone’s favourite, but I love eels, so it’s the fish of a lifetime for me.”
