Beaver 'decision' expected in coming months

RESPONSES to a national consultation on the reintroduction of beavers in England are being considered by Defra, and a response from Government is expected in early 2022.

Launched in August, the consultation was created to seek public opinion on a widescale reintroduction of the species.

Once widespread in England, beavers tend to polarise opinion in the angling community. Some fear the impact their dams could have on fish movements and the potential flood risk. Others have outlined the benefits they’d bring to our watercourses, diverting flows and creating more natural environments.

Defra is well aware of the ‘double-edged’ nature of the proposal, with a spokesperson telling us:

“We’re firmly committed to providing opportunities to reintroduce formerly native species, such as beavers, where the benefits are clear,” it says.

“We also understand that care must be taken to ensure that all potential impacts are considered.”
