Last year the capture of a huge orange koi carp sent the media world into a frenzy, with publications from CNN to the Daily Mail reporting that the "world's largest goldfish" had been landed.

The fish in question was Bluewater Lake's aptly named 'Carrot', and since the extensive viral media coverage, it is now perhaps one of the most famous living fish in the world. And recently another Brit managed to get the amazing creature to take his bait too!

Nathan Dixon with 'The Carrot' at 61lb-plus.

Nathan Dixon from Warwick was the man who struck gold on this occasion, during his annual visit to the French holiday venue in the Champagne region.

"After setting up, my mate opposite had the easily identifiable fish boshing in front of him, which is usually a sign it will be caught soon, so we were all very excited," Nathan said.

"I had a great start to the session, catching a mid-thirty and a 40lb fish, but what happened next blew me away.

"The rod rattled off and on picking it up, I knew it was a good fish, as it was hugging the lakebed and slowly plodding.

"I got it in about 30-yards and up popped the biggest koi carp I'd ever seen."

After a bit of teamwork with his friends, Nathan eventually got the enormous and colourful carp into his landing net.

"I couldn't look at the scales, but my mates confirmed it weighed a massive 61lb 12oz," he said.

That is one awesome goldfish!

"I was speechless, I've been after this fish for the last five years."

Despite being from the same family of fish, Cyprinidae, the carp or minnow family, koi and goldfish are actually separate species, with koi growing significantly larger than goldfish. The biggest koi in the world was kept in a private pond in Japan, measured 4ft long and hit a top weight of 91lb. In comparison the International Gamefish Association lists the current goldfish world record as just 9lb 6oz, caught in 2002 from a lake in California.

After the capture of the prized 'Carrot', you'd think Nathan's session couldn't have got much better, but it certainly did...

"It turned into a real red letter session, with a new PB mirror of 65lb 12oz, backed up with fish of 65lb 8oz, a fifty and numerous thirties and forties," he said.

It wasn't the only giant carp of Nathan's trip!

"It's safe to say I had a big smile on my face on my way home, and I'd like to thank Jason Cowler and his partner Loz Edwards for looking after us on this incredible trip."

All Nathan's carp fell to Key Bait Solutions ASM boilies on RigLocker Sliced Stiff rigs, which he cast out with Free Spirit rods and Shimano reels.
