The Angling Trust is today urging local anglers and residents to take part in North East Derbyshire District Council’s public consultation on the future of Wingerworth Lido, before the consultation closes on Saturday 23 November.

This consultation follows the Council’s decision in September to review its earlier move to end angling at the site — a decision that had ended a 25-year lease held by Clay Cross Angling Association and sparked strong local backlash.
The Trust is now asking local anglers and supporters to complete the short online survey to show that angling and nature conservation can successfully coexist. The outcome could determine whether fishing returns to the Lido — and potentially set a wider precedent for how councils handle community waters across the country.

The Council’s review is a welcome step, but it’s vital that local people respond to the consultation and show that angling is part of the solution, not the problem. We’ve provided clear evidence that well-managed angling enhances biodiversity and protects community waters like the Lido from neglect and antisocial behaviour.”
The Angling Trust is also highlighting that without a managed angling presence, public waters such as Wingerworth Lido often become vulnerable to poaching, littering, and antisocial behaviour — issues the club has worked hard to tackle over many years.
