In fishing, it can be worth deviating from our successful tactics every now and then to see if we can either catch a different species or something bigger. Not only does this keep fishing interesting, but it can also lead to the capture of fish we can only dream of, after all, if you don't try, you will never know!
On his most recent session, angler Martin Oxley decided he was going to target some of the better fish at his local Warwickshire club water, with the hope of connecting with some of the better tench, roach and perch in the venue. Despite not finding any of these species, he did catch the fish of a lifetime in the shape of this enormous 4lb crucian, which left him completely speechless as a result.

"I was fishing with two Northwestern Feeder rods, 8lb line with a Method feeder on one rod and maggot feeder setup on the other. After four hours with only a few small roach and perch my lefthand rod tip slowly pulled round," Martin told us.
"I could instantly tell it was a much better fish, and after a minute or so, I was absolutely stunned to see the gold flanks of the crucian break surface. I was gobsmacked and shaking as it slipped into the landing net," he recalled.
Leaving the fish to rest in the net while he composed himself, Martin made his way to the other angler fishing the lake a few swims up from himself, to ask if he could help weigh the fish and take a photo. Upon looking in the net, both anglers were completely stunned at what Martin had caught, as neither had seen a fish quite like it before, such is the rarity of a crucian over the 4lb barrier.
"I was shocked to see the scales show 4lb on the nose, and to say I was over the moon is an understatement. After a few quick photos the fish was returned and swam off strong," he said.
"The venue is quite large and holds very few crucians, so I consider myself very lucky to have had the privilege of seeing one of its special occupants."
