If you want to catch some of the biggest carp in the world, few venues offer a better chance than Euro Aqua in Hungary. Not only does this fishery hold the current mirror carp record, but it is also home to the largest common carp in the world too, offering visiting anglers a unique opportunity to catch some true monsters.
Alongside the handful of carp over the 100lb barrier, Euro Aqua boasts an incredible number of fish exceeding 70lbs, giving any angler a genuine chance of landing the carp of their dreams.
On his most recent visit, angler Jason Cann experienced a session almost impossible to comprehend, landing over 1,500lbs of carp during his trip. His haul included four fish over 80lbs, culminating in him landing one of his targets, a huge common known as 'Two Tone' weighing a staggering 101lb 2oz — all achieved despite fishing in one of the more challenging months for carp angling, which saw him fishing through freezing fog and snow.
THE BEST FISHING BIVVIES WILL KEEP YOU COMFORTABLE WHATEVER THE CONDITIONS.

"I arrived at Euro Aqua on November 10th, taking a cancellation just before my planned winter trip. I had been planning this for a year, observing the fish’s preferred areas as temperatures dropped," Jason told us.
"The weather was harsh with everything from frosts, freezing fog, snow, and ice, but a 4-day window at the start offered perfect conditions: good temperatures, air pressure, northerly winds, coinciding with the lead-up to a new moon," he added.
As with many pressured holiday venues, Jason knew it was crucial he got his spots right if he was going to catch anything, especially with the weather he was facing during the trip. Calling on previous experience from fishing the lake, Jason knew what he needed to identify and rather than rush to get the rods out as many do, he spent time finding the perfect spots.
"I identified two key silt areas, measured the exact depths, and adjusted the length of my hooklinks with 5oz leads accordingly to prevent my baits dragged into the lakebed. Not sure what would be best, I used my ever-faithful Hot Squid Hookbaits on two rods, with maggots on the others," Jason said.
"I decided to put 5kg of the house bait boilie crumb, to which I added my ever-faithful Winter Blend liquids, along with half a tray of maggots on the main spot, choosing to bait a second area with much less bait. This was 40 yards away and further out at long range, which I then left alone and didn’t fish it."
"I suspected that, with the drastic change in conditions, the carp would be very sensitive to line and angling pressure and likely back off the first area after a few bites. Once that happened, I planned to fish the second spot, which was already baited," Jason explained.

Within three hours fishing, Jason landed a brace of mirror's weighing 80lb and 55lb, along with a brute of a common at 62lb. All his bites came on the maggot hookbaits, so he was quick to change all his rods over to them with the fish showing a clear preference. For the next 36 hours, the spot went quiet, but Jason maintained his efforts, topping up the swim regularly to keep some fresh bait hitting the lakebed.
"On day 4, I moved to the long-range, lightly baited spot. Following the same strategy, I landed a 78lb and 75lb mirror just before dusk. That night, everything aligned perfectly and at around 7:45pm, a slow, powerful run ended with my target fish, the Two Tone, at 101 lbs, a culmination of a year’s planning," he recalled.
"I continued the strategy for the rest of the trip, moving swims to stay in touch with the fish, and reducing bait as the cold conditions intensified. Highlights included a brace of 81lb 8oz and 81lb 9oz carp during the snow and ice storms, and an 88lb 12oz fish after they cleared."
"The final tally saw me land 4x80s, 3x70s, 5x 60s, 11 x 50s, 4x 40s all topped off with the huge 101lb mirror. It was a truly unbelievable session, now the planning has started for next year," he conlcuded.
