AN old-school tactic – rolling meat – has fooled one of the biggest barbel of the season, a 17lb 14oz fish landed by Sheffield rod Steve Aldam from the middle Trent.
The method, that involves trundling a bit of meat along the riverbed, has enjoyed something of a renaissance in recent years, with an increasing number of anglers enjoying the fruits of this simple yet deadly way of fishing.
In the same morning’s fishing, the retired company director landed a further eight barbel for a total weight of 98lb. But big barbel catches are nothing new to Steve, who’s had a fantastic season so far, already landing a staggering 151 barbel.
