250-mile trip for monster barbel pays off

LANCASHIRE angler Paul Houghton has made the 250-mile round trip to target the tidal Trent’s barbel numerous times this season, and he finally hit the jackpot on his last session by banking this cracking fish weighing 18lb exactly.

Paul felt he had missed his chance of a PB barbel two weeks ago when he helped weigh and photograph an 18lb 7oz fish from a swim he wanted to fish. However, returning last Friday after he finished work, he landed the very same fish, 7oz down in weight. It’s a result he’s delighted with, particularly after all the legwork involved.

A small homemade boilie fished on a size 10 and a 4ft hooklink below a 5oz feeder containing hemp and small pellets did the trick for Paul.
