A PROACTIVE Midlands angling club has been awarded a £10,000 grant to expand its successful coaching programme.

Wellingborough and District Nene AC has run countless successful sessions over the last few years, and its efforts have been recognised by Sport England, which awarded the funding. It also received a further £1,000 from the Angling Trust.

Voted ‘Club of the Year’ by our readers in the latest National Angling Awards, Wellingborough and District plans to use the money to deliver 22 events over a six-month period in partnership with the Canal and Rivers Trust (CRT).

Bryan Dray, one of the club’s coaching team, told us:

“This grant will make a massive difference, and we’ll be running new events under the title of ‘Angling for Health’, which will offer fishing to groups that wouldn’t be in a financial position to take up angling. We’ll also be able to source more tackle that can be passed on to children who take up the sport following these events.”

John Ellis, National Fisheries Manager at the CRT, believes the grant will be money well spent. He said:

“The club’s tireless team have been consistently effective at getting people into fishing, and delivered more events than any of our other partners in 2020.”
