INTREPID anglers Alex Allan and Gordon McPhail experienced the charter trip of a lifetime last month, catching nine giant skate between them ranging from 54lb to an almighty 199lb.

The pair, who headed out of Dunstaffnage Marina with Blue Fin Charters, enjoyed a day of arm-aching sport off Scotland’s west coast, and were left in awe of the power of their quarry.

“There’s little in UK angling that can compare to the sheer brute strength of these magnificent and prehistoric beasts,” Alex said.

“They make unstoppable dives, where all you can do is hold on. But the effort of hauling these goliaths through 500ft of water is made worthwhile when you see their huge wingspan emerge from the depths. After a quick measure, scan, and photo they return with a graceful flick of their wings.”
