First-ever zander tips scales at 14lb

A double-figure river zander is hard to find, but Lee Crowther struck gold when he banked his first-ever ‘zed’ weighing 14lb.

The West Yorkshire angler was targeting catfish on A1 Pits’ popular section of the River Trent in Notts when the specimen took his mackerel head hookbait.

“After a searing run, it finally surfaced. I couldn’t believe my eyes, as I’ve never caught a zander before nor seen one of that size,” he said.

“The proportion of the mackerel I used was ideal for the shape and size of a catfish’s mouth, so I was surprised the zed took it.”

The local angler used 30lb trace to 20lb mainline and a running lead.
