Fishing tight against snags isn’t for the faint hearted but Alan Griffiths showed why it is worth taking a risk when he took this personal best 14lb 12oz fish specimen from the Warwickshire Avon.
The Birmingham-based angler had lost a large barbel the day before the session and revisited the stretch in a bid to put the record straight. Presenting his boilie hookbait under a dense willow bush, it didn’t take long for the alarms to scream in to action.
“As soon as I hooked it I had to pile the pressure on to stop it getting in the routes. Within five minutes it was in the net and I had beaten my best by almost 4lb.”
His rig was made up of 15lb mainline and a braided hooklink of the same strength to a size 6 hook.
