If you want to catch a big summer pike, there’s no better tactic than with fly fishing tackle - as proved by John Horsey when he boated this huge 32lb 8oz specimen.
The professional fly fishing guide set his sights on the huge predators that occupy the famous Chew Valley Reservoir in Somerset and headed for the area known as Stratford where he began working a home-made ‘silver sparkler’ lure on a floating line.
It wasn’t long before the effectiveness of this method was proved and incredibly it took John just over a minute to battle the predator into his waiting net.
“I don’t know why more predator anglers don’t try fly fishing for pike,” said John.
“This method allows you to target these huge fish all year round and will get you takes when all other methods fail.”
