Three-year wait ends in a 51lb mirror carp banked in Norfolk

A three-year quest came to a triumphant conclusion for  Ian Dowe when he slipped his net under this 51lb mirror.

The huge specimen, known as Baby Face, hasn’t visited the bank since last September and is only the third fish to be caught from Lenwade Charity Lake in Norfolk this year.

“I fished the Friday night but nothing much happened. I had to go home, but when I returned for another session on Sunday a mate of mine told me he’d seen a good fish roll the evening before in the swim,” said the 38-year-old local angler.

The night passed without event, but on Monday morning he received a steady take on his rod which he’d positioned over a gravel patch close to a deep gulley. After a heavy fight he netted the fish, which he’d spent the last three seasons chasing.

Ian put his faith in Essential Baits B5 boilies and offered a bottom bait on a 10ins 15lb Amnesia Clear hooklink and a size 8 Gamakatsu Iseama Twist with Eye Hook over around 100 free offerings.

“This was my first time out using the bait and I couldn’t have asked for a bigger confidence-booster than to catch the lake’s biggest resident and smash my seven-year-old pb of 34lb 4oz,” said Ian. “It was a bit nerve racking when I realised which carp I was connected to, but everything went well and she dropped in the net first time. There are still a couple of fish in the lake which I’d love to catch, including a mirror which hasn’t been out for two seasons and last weighed 39lb 2oz.”
