Anglers have reported thousands of cormorant sightings in just a single week after a new website set up by the Angling Trust went live.
Over 1000 fishermen registered at cormorantwatch.co.uk, the site set up to allow individuals to log exact sightings of the feathered predators, with the volume logged so far confirming angler’s fears that the birds’ numbers have spiralled out of control.
The Trust is now confident the information will prove crucial in its work to persuade the government to review the current licensing procedures to control cormorant numbers in order to protect the UK’s fish stocks from the predator.
“The response to this website has been nothing short of amazing. Over the first weekend of the river season there were 20 to 30 new sightings added to the map every hour,” Will Smith membership manager at the Angling Trust told Angling Times.
