Man-eating shark off Cornwall

The sighting of a ferocious whitetip shark off the coast of St. Ives has caused bookmakers, William Hill, to slash the odds of a great white shark carcass being washed up on the shores of Britain this year.

The odds (250/1 on January 1st 2011) have been reeled all the way in to 66/1 as rising sea temperatures lure the non native species to coastal waters. Hills are offering 1000/1 that Robson Green accidentally catches a Great White Shark off the coast of the UK or Ireland in 2011.

“We have been offering odds on great white sightings for several years and the price has never been so short. If you thought it would be safe to go into the water this summer, think again!” said Hill’s shark spokesman Joe Crilly.

Hills have also opened a competition for any shark spotters and are offering a free £500 bet for the best shark snap. The photo must be of a shark basking in the balmy British Waters. The competition closes at the end of the August Bank Holiday weekend on Monday 29th August 2011. All photos to be sent to
