There can’t be many more exciting ways of catching big chub than off the top – and one angler showed how effective it can be by landing five over the 6lb in the opening few days of the season.
Andy Warren banked specimens to 6lb 7oz from the Great Ouse on bread tactics – with all but one of them falling to the bait presented on the surface.
The Milton Keynes-based angler normally fishes for carp but sets aside the start of the campaign for rivers, where he almost exclusively targets his fish with buoyant baits.
“It’s just an exciting way to fish,” he said.
