Small Sussex river produces huge pike

Small venues don’t always mean small fish - just ask George Johnson, who landed a new personal-best pike weighing 30lb from the tiny River Adur in Sussex.

After taking three fish over 20lb from the secret stretch in recent years, George, from Horsham, decided to try his luck for a bigger specimen and was rewarded after the fish gobbled up his paternostered chub livebait.

“I’d seen a fry strike in the swim earlier in the day, so decided to have a few casts in the area towards the end of the session. Within seconds of dropping in, I was playing the fish, which was very long and could easily go over 35lb by March,” said 30-year-old George, who has now set his sights on landing an even bigger pike from the river.
