Change in wind direction produces 37lb 4oz mirror carp

A fresh wind brought a change of fortunes for Simon Murphy when he banked this 37lb 4oz mirror carp from Wyreside Fishery’s Wyre Lake.

After a quiet 24 hours on the 18-acre Lancashire venue, the Cumbria-based floor layer was planning on a change of swims, but when he returned from the café he was met with a new wind blowing straight into his peg. As a result he made the decision to stay put and top his spots up with 3kg of Nash Scopex Squid Liver Plus boilies - and was rewarded for the decision not long after.

“I was glad I stayed where I was because half-an-hour later I banked a 23lb mirror,” he told Angling Times. “Another half-hour passed and I was in again, but this time the fish found sanctuary in a weedbed and I had to go out in the boat to try to free it up. Following a brief tussle, my prize eventually hit the spreader block, and when I saw the sheer size of the fish’s frame I was literally shaking,” he added.

Back on the bank the much sought-after resident, which is known as Gladiator 2, pulled the scales around to 37lb 4oz, breaking Simon’s previous best by 10lb. He then rounded the session off nicely with a final fish of 25lb 2oz.

Simon beat all his carp with Fox hooklinks and Fox Arma Point SSC hooks, presented alongside 4oz leads on safety clips.
