If you enjoy your perch, pike and zander fishing, be sure to check out Daiwa’s stunning new Prorex predator range.
The brand takes in rods, reels and accessories, as well as a huge collection of award-winning lures that should hit the tackle shops in early Spring 2017. Daiwa considers Prorex more of a lifestyle concept than a mere fishing brand, putting as much emphasis on anglers enjoying the pursuit of their quarry in the wilderness as on the catch itself.
After a trip to Daiwa’s sprawling manufacturing base in Scotland revealed the immense depth of its new Prorex brand, Angling Times highlights just a few items showing the quality and diversity of the range.
LIVE TROUT SWIMBAIT
The Duck Fin tail of the Prorex Live Trout Swimbait produces strong blasts under the water, while front and rear fins pulsate. Two line attachment eyelets give slightly different actions.
This multi-sectioned lure sinks horizontally with an injured fish motion and wiggles saucily on the retrieve. Its 3D print finish imitates a real fish. In 10cm, 15cm and 20cm sizes, it’s ideal for pike, zander and perch.
Price: From £8.99
Minnows are the main prey fish of many predators. The 16cm Prorex Minnow Shallow provokes fish to strike at it, and is perfectly suited to twitching and jerk-baiting. An eyelet at the belly takes an extra treble.
CLASSIC SHAD DF
This Classic Shad’s Duck Fin tail generates strong ‘come and get me’ vibrations. Ribs on the tail wrist help the lure fold back as a fish inhales it. Designed to absorb and retain applied flavours, it can be worked fast or slow.
The new Hybrid Crank combines the advantages of a plug with all the benefits of a soft plastic lure, producing soft vibrations that mimic a real fish. Thanks to its long diving lip, the lure gains depth quickly. At 14cm it comes with an additional tail.
The Mermaid Shad is suitable for all light jigging and drop shotting techniques, and is a lure you can customise yourself. By cutting the inner membrane of the unique flat tail to V-tail, Pintail or Forktail shape you can achieve three very different actions. It’s ideal for fishing for zander and perch.
As you’d expect from Daiwa, the Prorex brand features some stunning new reels. Three sizes of bait caster all boast line guidance management, Magforce brakes, star drags with slick mechanism and precision-built aluminium spools. Prorex and Prorex RA front drag spinning reels come in an eye-catching purple and black livery to match the rods and features include Twistbuster 2 line management, Air Bail, Air Rotor, automatic bail return (very handy when constantly casting lures) as well as a Hardbody Z construction that will take all the knocks.
Price: £125 - £200
PROREX ROD RANGES
Prorex’s six-rod series caters for all predator fishing techniques, with prices to suit most pockets. The top-end AGS Spinning and AGS bait casting models take advantage of Daiwa’s build technology to give amazing handling and super-fast actions, teamed with the highest quality fitments.
The mid-priced XR rods have super-sensitive tips to ensure spot-on lure presentation and buffer the lunges and head shakes of aggressive fish. V-joint spigots guarantee an even fish-playing curve, while a super-quick recovery rate makes them ideal for long casts. Standard Prorex rods are built around light, fast-actioned blanks to handle all sizes of shads and plugs. HVF fibre construction loads weight across the entire tip section so they will chuck a lure a very long way.
The Teflon-coated Prorex tool range covers all bases. Long-nosed pliers, curved and standards forceps and a pistol disgorger enable you to whip your hooks out in double-quick time, causing minimal stress to your quarry. Also available are split ring and crimping pliers. All of these tools feature eye-catching green and black plastic-coated handles.

Italian tackle giants Colmic have in the past been well-known for producing iconic terminal tackle items – just think about Jolly pole floats or Nuclear hooks – but 2017 sees a continuation of top of the range rods, poles and seat boxes for the UK market including the much-vaunted Airon F66 pole and the One Edition 2.0 seat box.
Made with Italian style and tackle know how, the kit is far from continental tackle that’s been shoe horned into working for the British market though. Each rod and pole has been designed and built with what the angler on our shores requires, coupled with extensive testing from Colmic’s consultants and top anglers to make sure each product is just right.
The end result is tackle that demands a serious look. The F66 in particular is a real gem of a top flight competition pole and there’s also feeder rods for commercial fishery work and a more ‘middle of the road’ pole in the 9401 X3 for anglers working on a budget.
Colmic Airon F66 16m pole
Few pole can have been more eagerly-awaited than the Airon F66 and the it most certainly walks the walk as well as talking the talk, bettering the preceding superb F44 model in spades to put it right up there with the best competition long poles for 2017.
A combination of lightness and strength makes the F66 a real joy to fish with at any length, whether you’re slapping pellets at 16m into open water on a commercial fishery or inching a hemp rig under a far bank bush on the canal. High performance materials and Italian design and know how produces a pole with balance and speed to hit quick bites but rigidity to ship in and out quickly plus power to land bonus fish when the time comes.
Billed as an all-rounder, the F66 comes with a range of added extras including three mini half butt extensions that can be fitted from the No 4 section all the way to the No10 section to let you fish longer distances when required plus a Force-4 Power No 3 section that when added, gives the F66 real backbone for heavy duty work.
The top kit package is impressive too with eight EC200 top two kits and a stiff cupping kit supplied, all finished off in a smart Colmic pole holdall and a measure of how much Colmic rate this pole can be seen in the two year warranty offered with the F66 – that’s confidence if ever you saw it!

Colmic Super Carp Force H1 Slim margin pole
You might need to look twice at this pole in the shops as at first glance, you could be forgiven for thinking that it is a landing net handle such is the thin diameter and stylish looks – but then the clue to the thinness of the Force H1 is in the name after all!
As far removed from a droopy, cumbersome margin pole as you can get, the Force H1 fishes just like an all-round long pole at the full 11m making it possible to use for fishing open water out in front of you as well as down the edge on carp lakes.
Don’t worry about power either as the pole’s slim profile doesn’t mean that any strength has been sacrificed as a trade-off. Made from full carbon using Colmic’s Pro Force technology with titanium re-inforcement in all the right areas, you just know that the Force H1 won’t give at the crucial moment.
The super-strong power top kit supplied with the pole has enough flex in it to prevent breakage when a big carp runs and there’s enough bend in the pole when fully assembled to hit sharp bites quickly but not so much that it wobbles all over the shop afterwards. The provided top kit is pre-bushed and features a side puller system while inside the pole is a match kit that can easily be turned into a power kit by throwing away the No 1 section.

Colmic 9401 X3 13m pole
More and more anglers fish purely on commercial carp waters today so the need for match kits and slim, lightweight poles simply isn’t there. That’s the thinking behind Colmic’s 9401 X3, an out and out power carp pole for the demanding UK market.
Limited to 13m, a range most commonly fished on British waters by match and pleasure anglers alike, the 9401 is more than comfortable crashing out big nets of carp time and time again but this is no thick, heavy and unwieldy pole!
In fact it has a very slim profile more akin to a match pole but there’s plenty of strength and rigidity built into each section to ensure that not only does the pole remain arrow straight even at the maximum length but it also has the ruggedness to let you strike and pull hard when targeting double figure carp.
There’s also great flexibility as the package is provided with an extra No 3 section and four power top two kits. Multiple length options are easy thanks to the two half butt sections that fit into the No 6, 7 and 8 sections, giving you extra reach when needed without sacrificing on performance and balance. There’s also an optional parallel extension that will take the pole to 14.5m.

Colmic One Edition 2.0 seat box
Not only does this superb new box look the part but it functions beautifully as well – it’s the ultimate seat box system for the modern UK match angler and packs a price to match but for your money you do get arguably one of the best boxes that the New Year will see.
Constructed from sturdy ABS plastic to maintain lightness, rigidity and strength, the One Evolution has two distinct storage areas comprising of a modular top unit that allows three different height adjustments for the base plate via an allen key, meaning that your sitting position is as accurate as possible and suits your height.
The comfortable cushion seat comes with a pole holder and stowed underneath is a rig tray has a raised surround to keep out water and increase box rigidity. There’s also two front drawers for smaller tackle items and another winder tray. All units are held in place by horizontal clips. Sliding on runners in the gap beneath the main frame is the second module made up of two further winder trays plus lid and handle.
All six of the box’s 30mm legs extend and are held in place with a super secure clamping action which grips virtually all of the leg’s circumference, operated by the easy grip Pommel hand wheels. The sliding cassette-type footplate retracts into the base unit, so saving lots of space and can be locked in the open or closed position and built into the plate is a thread for attaching keepnets.
Extras include a pair of Pole Hooks to hold the pole in place when throwing in groundbait, a luxury Bump Bar that can be tilted up or down to a range of angles, depending on if you are fishing the pole or rod and line, a sturdy umbrella arm, padded shoulder strap and a standard side tray measuring 50cm x 37cm.
Colmic Hurricane seat box
A superb value for money lightweight seatbox that’s well within the price range of pleasure and club match anglers looking for a box that will last them years of loyal service combined with the niceties that make up the ultimate modern day box.
The Hurricane’s storage consists of two front drawers, one cross drawer and an under seat shallow winder tray plus a 38mm deeper base tray and the entire top unit is ‘floating’, which means that it can be adjusted up or down to accommodate anglers of all heights without moving the main legs and footplate.
Stability is guaranteed by the six 30mm legs that are all extendable, the sliding cassette-type footplate having locking screws to secure it in an open or closed position and there’s even a locking keepnet spike attached to the front of the plate. Finally, there’s a large side tray that when not in use slides conveniently underneath the top unit.
Colmic Gumma Landing Nets
Here’s a range of landing net heads with a bit of a difference! Gumma nets have EVA foam around much of the strong metal frame which achieves two things; firstly, it means that the net will float when accidentally dropped into the water or dropped down when playing a fish and secondly, the foam protects rigs from damage when rubbed against the frame while unhooking a fish. The mesh is quick drying, fish-friendly and wide enough to sweep through water at speed and there are three sizes on offer: 45cm x 35cm, 50cm x 40cm and 57cm x 47cm.
Colmic Scrape Extreme Feeder rods
If you need a bit of beef putting into your feederfishing in 2017, the Extreme series will be just the job! With three rods in the range, taking in a slim 9ft light feeder and 10ft and 11ft medium models, the trio makes up the perfect rods to take on commercial carp or even big river and lake work when the weather warms up.
Two-piece to fit inside ready rod sleeves with ease, Extreme rods match a soft forgiving tip section to a mid-section with plenty of backbone, allowing fish to be played quickly but without the danger of hook-pulls. Each model arrives with three push-in fibreglass quivertips of 0.5oz, 1oz and 1.5oz and are suited for mainlines up to 8lb and hooklinks down to around 0.12mm.
Colmic Scrape Gold Lion Feeder Rods
You don’t always need a powerful rod for feederfishing, especially in the winter and Colmic has taken this on board when designing the Gold Lion rods, part of the Scrape range that’s tailor-made for light line and small hook work when F1s, skimmers and small carp are the target on UK mixed fisheries.
Available in 11ft and 12ft lengths and capable of casting up to 40g, both rods are built on super slim full carbon blanks with a quick recovery and lovely soft through action that will minimise hook pulls or bumped fish yet provide enough backbone to punch out a feeder. Each model has a full EVA handle and three push in carbon quivertips rated at 1oz, 1.5oz and 2oz.

Both models are extremely light and user-friendly, being made from the same type of carbon that you’d find on premium fishing rods. They will take baits up to 20mm and come in a protective neoprene sleeve.
Price: SCR £39.99, MRC £44.99
NUTRABAITS ALTERNATIVE POP-UPS
These high-attract hookbaits can be used in isolation or as an alternative source of attraction over beds of bait. They stay buoyant for a long time, and are ideal for all presentations. Side tank zips allow for a quick release, and it comes with a centre strap with hoods at each end, for quick and easy attachment to your bedchair. It’s also compatible with most bedchairs on the market today.

Sensas River & Lake Pole Float range
We’ve probably all used a Sensas pole float at one time or another and new for 2017 are the Lake and River ranges offering floats in tried and tested pencil and rugby ball body shapes with a Sensitive or Monster version to suit the fishing you do.
Nash’s new kit for 2017 sees upgrades of one of the Essex brand’s most iconic ranges – the Hi-Gun range is being replaced by the new KNX series of products, the aim being to deliver many of the features found on high end Nash products but at an affordable price.
Whether you’re new to the sport or thinking about making the step up to targeting specimen carp for the first time, the KNX range covers everything that you’re likely to need. There’s also a host of new tackle including bivvies, Pursuit rods, Indulgence bedchairs plus luggage.
Nash originated the carp cradle concept which suspended carp off the ground to reduce dangers during unhooking and handling. Air Cradles now take carp care another step further. The base spreads the weight of the carp, so fish up to 50kg are suspended safely off the ground. Air Cradles use three heavy-duty inflatable tubes, two supporting the base material for ground clearance and the third providing a secure area to contain a carp for unhooking. They inflate quickly using the supplied foot pump and pack down smaller than the traditional metal framed cradles.
Prices: Air Cradle £131.99, Air Cradle Monster £148.99
The popular Sleep Systems have received a few design tweaks to improve comfort and create a smaller packdown size. The mesh bases have been replaced with an enhanced central lumbar support which eliminates mattress sag over time. There are 5 Season and 4 Season ranges with five different models in each. The 5 Season features twin layer deluxe zipped 3 and 2 Season duvets which combine for ultimate protection and will keep you warm on the coldest of nights. The bottom duvet layer features body baffles to help retain body heat.
Price: From £329.99
The iconic Titan bivvy has been a common sight around carp lakes for the last 20 years and has built a reputation as one of the strongest bivvies of all time but with advances in technology, manufacturing and materials it was seen as time by Nash to give the Titan a facelift.
Four models in the range include super compact overnight shelters (Titan TC and TC Pro) and larger versions for UK and European session anglers (Titan T1 and T2). New features include an upgraded glass-filled nylon block design for reduced weight and enhanced rigidity, a flat-back frame to create a flat back to tuck bedchairs away and improve usuable space, rain gutters to aid water run-off, legs fitted to the cover to achieve a free standing rigid design without the tension straps, and an internal light hanging hook beneath the central block.
Price: £384.99 - £769.99
Four new chairs are added to the Indulgence range. The Hi-Back Camo (£164.99) offers the ultimate in bankside luxury with an extra-long extended back section to protect your neck and head from chilling winds. The Daddy Long Legs Camo (£131.99) boasts extended legs which position you higher for easier mobility, and the Big Daddy Camo (£159.49) offers additional width for unrivalled comfort. Guru has become one of the most distinctive and sought-after brands for the keen commercial match angler - who has not at least heard of, if not actually used, QM1 hooks, X-Safe Method feeders and Reaper rod rests in recent years?
World Feeder Champion Steve Ringer plays a key role in new product development, along with match ace Pemb Wrighting and Guru brand manager Adam Rooney. So it comes as no surprise that all the latest kit for 2017 is packed with quality and innovation!
AT Tackle Editor Mark Sawyer met with Pemb and Adam at the Guru Essex HQ to give everything the once over under his expert eye…
Three new types of Guru Pellet Waggler will soon be available – Standard, Big Water and Foam.
Standard floats in 6g, 8g and 10g versions and the larger Big Water versions in 10g, 12g and 14g are made from a high-grade balsa said to improve their flight and casting accuracy. Each float also gets a very thin but incredibly robust lacquer coating for added durability. The brass inserts are designed to reduce diving, and promote near-instant self-cocking attributes.
The new Foam Pellet Wagglers (3.2g, 4.4g and 6.5g) in Guru’s new surface camo colour are intended for very shallow work and are ideal for F1s at long range. They can be shotted conventionally, or with Guru’s new waggler conversion weights.
Price: Big Water £4.50, Standard £3.99, Foam (pack of two) £4.99
ROUNDED FLOAT ADAPTORS
These simply yet effective pellet waggler adaptors have rounded clip-ends that prevent the eye of the float from becoming wedged into a corner. It will therefore always fold flat on the cast or strike. Robust enough to take a bit of hammer, these adaptors can be used with all types of pellet wagglers.
PELLET WAGGLER CONVERSION WEIGHTS
These fabulous conversion weights are ideal for use with the new Guru Foam pellet wagglers, as they allow the shotting pattern to be instantly changed to suit fishing conditions.
Thanks to their unique over-moulded design they are as tough as old boots, and cannot be pulled apart. They can be used with most other types of waggler too.
Price: £3.99 (pack of two)
GURU MICRO SHOT
Guru Micro Shot will be available in a range of sizes from 8 to 12. The handy-sized 15g containers – which, incidentally, offer superb value for money – have a seamless corner opening system to prevent spillage.
The ZLT-sourced shot is soft and well-cut, and easy to use even on thicker diameter lines.
DOUBLE POLE SOCK
This clever new pole sock is clearly designed by match anglers, for match anglers. The double front allows spare pole sections to be left in situ when double shipping, and the gap between the two cups is in the form of a soft rubber-protected tulip, which will trap any size of pole section from a fourth tight up to a 16m butt. The sock is unobtrusive, not too deep, and appears to be very hard-wearing.
FUSION ACCESSORY BAGS
These 110 and 150 Guru EVA Fusion accessory bags have full-length three-sided zips that allow their tops to be fully opened lengthways for quick, easy access to the contents.
Ideal for all cage, pellet, Method or blockend feeders, they are compatible with other Fusion accessory items and the Guru Rig Case
PELLET BAIT STRAINERS
Simple yet effective, these Pellet Bait Box Strainers in three-pint and one-pint sizes take the guesswork out of preparing micro pellets. Simply soak the pellets and remove the strainer!
The slots are small enough not to allow any pellets through, and I also rather fancy these strainers will be used for dyeing, flavouring and colouring meat and corn hookbaits.
Price: 3pt £2.50, 1pt £2
Months of field trials have resulted in Pure, which Guru believes to be the best hooklength material on the market. Ideal for all feeder, waggler and pole rigs it comes in ten diameters from 0.8mm (1lb breaking strain) up to 0.30mm (10lb bs).
It’s extremely resilient, with a good knot strength, it won’t kink up, and is virtually invisible in water.
The larger 0.25mm and 0.3mm sizes of Pure make superb feeder and straight lead leaders when the angler is faced with clear or shallow water. On 50m spools.
Guru Pole Pots in small, medium and large sizes have soft, safe fittings that fit virtually any size of top kit without causing it damage. In a non-spook two-tone colour, they are extremely light, have strategically-placed holes that prevent bait from sticking, and include two types of fitting in every twin pack of pots.
The smallest pot has a unique easy-load lid system that simply pulls out without having to remove the whole pot – clever stuff.
Guru’s brilliant 74-strong army of ready-tied rigs now has some new recruits. The latest LWG, F1 and X-Strong versions are all tied using entirely original Guru components.
The 6ins-long hooklengths are superbly well tied, with just the right sized compression loop knots and, most importantly, they all have the line coming cleanly off the front side of the spade. Available in packs of eight.
Polar Match Kombats.
These ace fleece lined combat trousers are sure to prove hugely popular with all anglers this winter. Their smart cut and design not only provides them with a great modern look, they are also toasty warm and very comfy to wear- ideal for the coldest of days.
