218lb of Lake John bream and skimmers makes strong case
An incredible 218lb net of silverfish has been landed from the prolific Lake John in Essex.
The venue is regarded by many as the best silverfish commercial in the UK, and Drennan and Bait-Tech-backed match ace Chris Vandervleit proved why when he won a recent contest with a 228lb 8oz net that included a 10lb carp.
Apart from that single mirror, his catch was made up of bream and skimmers as he fed his way through eight pints of casters, a pint of dead red maggots and half-a-kilo of worms.
The pole with three dead red maggots threaded on to a size 16 hook was the winning tactic, and his catch was taken from peg 10 on the award-winning complex that currently has a silverfish match record standing at 254lb.
“I thought I had close to 200lb, it was such an incredible match, but I was blown away with 228lb,” said Chris.
“The regular introduction of pots of chopped worm and caster, plus two balls of groundbait every 15 minutes, was the winning formula and kept fish coming for the whole six hours of the match.
“Along with the bream and the skimmers there were also a few roach and hybrids mixed in, plus the double-figure carp. This just goes to show what an incredible venue this is. It was a day I will never forget.”
Lake John boss Colin Bartlett is extremely proud of his fishery’s reputation and its ability to produce huge match weights of silverfish.
“We manage the fishery very carefully as we net the lake once a year, monitor stocks and shut the venue for one day a week.
“This all helps to create an environment where the fish thrive,” Colin told Angling Times.
“It’s only a matter of time until the silverfish record here is broken again.”
