Teenager Charlie Terry began 2015 with a bang as he caught this 54lb 2oz mirror during a weekend session.
The Fox and Mad Baits-sponsored 17-year-old caught the specimen at close range at a windswept southern gravel pit.
The apprentice labourer said: “It blew my mind – what a chunk! It was a new pb and a great way to start 2015 – roll on the rest of the year.”
Explaining how the session unfolded, West Sussex-based Charlie added: “Once I arrived I was greeted by rather windy conditions which seemed bang on for fishing but not for standing in.
“I dropped by bucket in what I call a viewing swim to enable me to see most of the lake, but due to the wind this made identifying signs of fish near on impossible. I took a walk down the shallower end and it was mega coloured up – I thought this might encourage some feeding behaviour so I decided to set up in the nearby swim.”
Two minutes after casting out, Charlie bagged a 14-pounder, but then the weather changed.
“The wind then swung round bringing a colder feel, but as soon as darkness fell fish activity exploded in front of me. At around 8am it was all quiet when the left-hand rod pulled up tight and popped out of the clip. I wound down to find only slack at first, but then another wind on the reel let me feel the fish was suddenly down to my right.
“From the fight it was obviously a lump as it was one of those tell-tale battles, with lots of big lunges. Over the net it went mental and as I got my first glimpse it blew my mind!
“I Spent the rest of the day watching and as the weather turned and got worse I decided to head for home with a massive smile!”
Charlie used Mad Baits’ The Nutz and Wicked White boilies presented as snowman rigs made with Fox Cortex and size 4 Fox XSC hooks.
