A secret homemade bait recipe helped Stewart Harris locate a series of chub to 7lb 1oz during a session on the Great Ouse.
The Hampshire-based angler created a pungent paste and wrapped it around a boilie to try and gain the attentions of the fish in difficult conditions.
With temperatures plunging below zero, a single bite would have signalled success but he got much more than he bargained for with specimens of 4lb 13oz, 5lb 1oz and 5lb 2oz falling.
Action picked up a notch with a 6lb 4oz chub before he landed the biggest of the session at the third time of asking.
“I missed a knock and a while later I had a further indication which I struck at instead of letting it develop,” explained Stewart.
“After recasting I sat and held the rod touch ledger style and this time I hit the bite and landed the big fish.”
