Match angling legend Dick Clegg has revealed plans for a national ‘North V’s South’ contest as part of a campaign to raise the £30,000 needed to send England’s national teams to this year’s World Championships.
The disabled and veterans squads have once again not been unable to secure a sponsor or the funding needed to take part in the event in Portugal this June, so the former Drennan Team England manager is now on a mission to ensure the UK is represented on the world stage.
Members of the ladies squad also face the same issue as they prepare to compete in Belgium this August, so numerous fundraising events have been pencilled in to help reach the £30,000 target.
These include a ‘north vs south’ event, which is hoped to attract some of the biggest names in the sport along with match anglers across the UK, plus a separate Lancashire vs Yorkshire ‘War of the Roses’ style event also arranged to aid the cause.
“Our angling teams are among the most successful in the world and it is a crying shame that we are once again in this position with less than four months until it all starts,” explained Dick.
“If we don’t raise the cash then the anglers have to pay for themselves. In previous years, we’ve wanted to include people in the squads, but they haven’t been able to afford it.”
“We are very grateful to those arranging fundraising matches but they need help and we need a sponsor to provide additional funds so that we can concentrate on bringing back gold,” explained Dick.
There are concerns that the cash shortage could eventually take its toll on the incredible medal success that England have become accustomed too and Dick continued to say: “Lots of other countries have plenty of funds to cover the costs of competing.
“The Italians have a pot of over £1m and can take over 20 team members to cover everything. We take less than half that number which hampers us.”
“We are determined to keep bringing the medals home but we need that level of backing to keep that level of success up.”
