Top carper Ian Russell got among the fish at Farlows recently with a quartet of twenties.
The Avid-backed angler headed for an area of the popular Buckinghamshire day-ticket water with good coldwater form and opted to go easy on the baiting.
He said: “I set up on the Factory Bank and fished peg 48 to an area that I knew had a good track record for producing winter fish.
“While other anglers were spodding and introducing bait, I fished single Sonubaits 24/7 pop-ups to the central zone of the lake at approximately 100 yards. I didn’t think the fish would respond to lots of bait and didn’t want to spook the fish by spodding, so I opted for a more stealthy approach.”
Using what he calls the Flick Rig – a variation of the hinged stiff rig tied with longshank Avid LSK hooks, 20lb Pin Down and 25lb Stiff Rig Filament – Ian got among the fish quickly.
“The first take occurred within the hour,” he said, “and resulted in a stunning linear which tipped the scales round to 26lb 8oz. An hour later, one of my other rods was away and I banked a 23lb common.
“It all went quiet then until the evening, when I had a 21lb mirror. The next takes were at first light the following morning, which resulted in mirrors weighing 22lb and 25lb.”
