It was first time lucky for Rhys Miles as his debut visit to an Essex syndicate yielded this 54lb mirror.
The 19-year-old carpenter was invited to fish Fryerning Fisheries’ Main Lake by a friend and carved out a new personal best under 10 hours after setting up.
The Basildon angler said: “What a start to 2015! I’m absolutely Buzzing!”
He added: “It was my first time at the venue and I fished as a guest of my good mate Joe Fairney. I fished from the Log swim, casting out just before dark. The rod ripped off just nine hours into the quick session at 2am. The battle was epic – it was like nothing I have ever experienced before!”
Charlie Knowles of XL Carp, which runs the fishing at Fryerning, said: “It’s been another fantastic week at the fishery with another well-chuffed angler.”
The fish, known as the Gurm, fell to Nash Scopex Squid bolies fished on a snowman rig constructed with 20lb Korda N-Trap Semi Stiff, a size 8 Kurv Shank hook and a 3oz lead. Rhys baited a silty gulley at 60 yards with about 50 free offerings.
