Two-day trip to Orchid Lakes results in brace of 30lb-plus mirrors

A two day trip to Orchid Lakes resulted in Joe Jagger’s ‘best ever winter session’ with a brace of 30lb-plus mirrors gracing his net.

The 25-year-old made the 500-mile round trip from his home in Cumbria to the popular Oxfordshire day-ticket water and was rewarded with carp of 33lb 10oz and 31lb 14oz on his first night.

Setting up on the back of the wind, Joe targeted an 8ft silt gulley at 80 yards range and baited the feature with 2kg of chopped and whole CC Moore Live System boilies, Milkimin Pellets and sweetcorn. Over the top of this he cast two rods, one with a 10mm boilie tipped with a single piece of Enterprise fake corn on a blow-back rig comprising 15lb Kryston Super Mantis, size 7 Nash Fang X hooks and Taska Line Aligners and the other with a pop-up hookbait on a hinged-stiff rig.

“Both of the fish came to the bottom bait rod. I had the 33lb 10oz mirror first and then the smaller of the pair a couple of hours later after topping the spot up with a bit more bait,” said the Taska and CC Moore-backed rod.

“I’d never had a December thirty before so to say I’m buzzing is an understatement. The lake is awesome and the stock is something else. I can’t wait to get back down there again.

“I was down there to film a segment for an episode of Sky Sport’s Tight Lines which is due to be aired in January, so it was a right result to catch a couple of stunning fish for the cameras,” he added.
