Since the start of the season James Betts has enjoyed a hat-trick of barbel personal bests from the River Nene – this 15lb 5oz the highlight.
Prior to June 16, the Peterborough-based carer’s pb for the species stood at just 5lb. He upped this to 8lb 6oz before going on to land fish of 14lb and 15lb 5oz in the space of four days.
All of his fish were taken on high-attract 16mm SBS boilies wrapped in paste and offered in conjunction with a mesh PVA bag filled with boilies, pellets and paste.
The 35-year-old said: “The 15-pounder stripped at least 30yds of line on the take and at first I thought I’d hooked a river carp.”
