Charlie Russell enjoyed a memorable winter session on Fenland Fisheries’ Willow Lake topping a nine fish haul with this cracking 46lb 8oz mirror.
A boilie and maggot cocktail proved lethal for the 30-year-old from Stretham, Cambridgeshire who lightly baited an area towards the middle of the lake where he located a slight change in depth.
“I knew the lake was fishing pretty well and a friend of mine had caught two thirties and one of the known forties just a couple of days earlier so I felt fairly confident,” Charlie told Angling Times. “During the first night I had two fish – a common of 37lb 14oz and a 26lb mirror. The following afternoon it really kicked off and between 1.30pm and 4pm I actually had two double takes which is mad for January. The first of these included fish just a few ounces short of 30lb and the lake’s biggest resident, The Spacehopper, at 46lb 8oz. Fish of 35lb, 28lb and three low-mid-twenties then followed before the end of the trip,” he added.
All of Charlie’s fish were taken on either maggot rigs or 10mm Premium Carp Fishing 10mm Ghost pop-ups tipped with a few real maggots.
