River Ebro now the hot venue for specimen carp

The River Ebro in Spain is famed for its large catfish but it is fast growing a reputation for its specimen carp – as the team from Fox International found out.

Consultants Tom Maker, Andy Maker, Steve Spurgeon and Lewis Porter recently visited the Spanish waterway to film a segment for the free 2014 Edges DVD.

Despite temperatures of just seven degrees, the guys enjoyed some incredible action under the expert guidance of the CatMaster Tours team they landed a total of 35 carp including 12 over the 35lb-barrier during their three day stay.

Details of the biggest fish – a new pb for Steve Spurgeon - will be revealed in the DVD, but Steve also landed two low-40lb-plus carp, Tom Maker banked his first ever common over the 40lb-barrier in the shape of a huge 43lb specimen. His father, Andy, also managed a string of impressive commons to 39lb with Lewis’ biggest fish tipping the scales at over 38lb. Even the cameraman Harry Charrington found some spare time to bank four carp to over 36lb.

Simple tactics proved to be the key to success with all of their fish coming to large halibut pellet hookbaits mounted on size 2 and size 4 hooks and 35lb Coretex Matt coated braid hooklinks.

Fox group media manager Lewis Porter said: “The action was really incredible and should make top notch viewing when the DVD hits the shops at the end of March.”
