Top barbel angler Dave Chambers paid his own tribute to the late Fred Crouch by banking this 16lb 4oz monster from a Southern river.
It was his only bite of a late afternoon session in which he relied on a large piece of bacon grill and no feed to capture his second biggest whisker ever, which is just 4oz short of his personal best. Petersfield, Hampshire-based Dave hooked it into darkness just before he was due to pack up.
“I would like to dedicate this fish to the memory of Fred. I’ve known him since the 80s when I was a NASA rep and we were in the barbel catchers together. He was just an inspiration for barbel anglers and an all-around nice guy.
“The fish came from a swim just 10 minutes after I’d moved into it. I just had a feeling I had to move 200 yards upstream to fish there at the top of a big slack, and my hunch was proved right!” he said.
Dave fished a G Force Tackle 15lb Black out hook link, 12lb mainline and a size 6 G Force hook.
