Huge River Avon barbel pulls rod from rest

This 13lb 8oz barbel was caught by James Champkin during a session on the Hampshire Avon.

His first day on the river only produced a chub of 5lb 1oz but on the second day the Norfolk-based all-rounder baited two swims with a mix of hemp, pellets and 10mm boilies.

“After no action in the first swim I moved to my second prebaited area – a very deep run just a rod length out, leading to a fallen tree,” said James.

“Within 15 minutes I had a savage bite that pulled the rod from the rest and after a short but powerful fight I managed to bundle my new personal best in to the net.”
