First bite from new water is 10lb 6oz tench

Phil Spinks’ first bite from a new water he has been targeting for tench and bream produced this 10lb 6oz specimen.

Casting to the bottom of a gravel bar in 7ft of water, the Norfolk-based manager of Avenue Angling fished four red maggots on the hook and kept the swim topped up on a little-and-often basis with a mixture of maggots, hemp and micro pellets via a small spod.

“I was over the moon as the previous trip was a complete blank for me. I also added a small male tench of around the 3lb-4lb mark,” said Phil, whose rigs consisted of 60gr Korum Grub Feeders, 10lb braid and size 12 Xpert hooks. “I fish fairly tight lines in this style of fishing to maximise the bolt rig effect,” he added.
