Biggest ever canal silver bream caught at 2lb 4oz

A classic and underused bait led to the capture of what is believed to be the biggest ever silver bream caught from a UK canal.

The 2lb 4oz specimen was landed from the Taunton to Bridgwater Canal by Russell Hilton after he cast out a floatfished tare.

The Devon-based rod told Angling Times: “My understanding is that this may be one of the largest silver bream caught from somewhere other than the current record venue for the species, Mill Farm in Sussex, and certainly from a canal.”

The previous biggest reported capture of a canal silver bream was a fish of 2lb 1oz taken by Keith Jobling from the Grand Union in 2011.
