Geoff Gore couldn’t have asked for a better fiftieth birthday present than this 50lb 9oz personal best mirror caught from Swan Lake on the Bluebell day-ticket complex.
The first two days of his three night session passed without event, but on the third day when the heavy rain finally stopped the Cambridgeshire-based team leader saw a large fish crash out right over his rig which he had cast to a clear spot at 90yds range on the 12-acre Northants water.
“I was actually talking to my friend in the swim next door when I saw the carp show, and I told him that I thought I’d have a take in the next half hour,” he told Angling Times.
Sure enough, 30 minutes his prediction came true and he had a slow take on one of his rods as the bobbin steadily pulled up.
“I tightened down and lifted into the fish and even at that range it felt heavy. It took me around 20 minutes to get close to the bank and when it rolled over my mate and I instantly recognised the golden flank and the huge set of shoulders which belong to the big mirror known as Dave. After a couple of minutes I christened my new landing net which my wife had bought me with the second biggest carp in the lake and on the scales it smashed my old personal best of 38lb 8oz. Dave has been hovering around the upper-forty pound mark for the last few years so I was delighted to be the first person to catch it over 50lb on my fiftieth birthday!”
Geoff’s winning presentation consisted of an Ultra Buoyancy Baits Pineapple and N-Butyric corkball pop-up mounted on a short 1.5ins chod rig tied with 20lb Korda Mouth Trap and a size 8 Choddy hook. This was fished on a length of leadcore with a 1.5oz lead over 4kg of Mainline Baits Cell boilies.
