Bitterly-cold weather tested the 51 Army lads as they convened for this annual Army AA Group Two match fished across Viaduct’s three lakes, but the carp still fed and it was a close frame.
Royal Artillery Centre rod Brian Shutler top-scored with 68-5-0 off peg 99 on the Cary Lake to win by what was in effect one good fish from team-mate Mick Craddock.
Faced with open water and a brisk wind whipping across the lake, Brian opted to fish the rod and line, starting off on the waggler on the deck and switching to the straight lead when the wind got up.
Sport wasn’t fast and furious with only seven carp finding the net, but most of them were proper fish including a 14lb specimen and three other doubles, making the most of his peg, which has been in great match form for the preceding two weeks.
On the team front, having the top two individuals wasn’t enough to give the Artillery team the honours, their Headquarters counterparts taking that honour with nine points against the 11 of the ‘gunners’.
