Salmon fishing ban placed on Hampshire rivers

The Environment Agency has slapped a ban on fishing for salmon in all Hampshire rivers to protect the vulnerable species.

Water levels have dropped critically low this year due to a lack of rainfall and in an effort to help the stocks recover from the tough summer officials from the government body have outlawed fishing for them in the county until January 17 2012.

"This necessary break on rivers such as the Test and Itchen will safeguard fish during their breeding season, resulting in increased fish stocks and better angling opportunities,” explained EA fisheries technical officer Paul Newman.
