One of the biggest ever hauls of specimen carp has been landed by a group of friends during a record week at the Les Quis complex in France, which saw a staggering 587 fish caught, including eight different fifties to 57lb.
Rik Johnson and his companions broke the old venue record, which was set by the Tackle Box five years ago, by over 50 fish during the manic session that also included 45 forties, 148 thirties, 328 twenties and 58 doubles.
Setting up on the Long Lake, the action started straight away for Rik, a manager at tackle outlet Chapmans Angling, and during the first night he banked three carp to mid-thirties. Using long range tactics he targeted a gap in the trees on the far margin at 140yds range and baited the spot with around 2kg of Nutrabaits Big Fish Cranberry boilies rolled by Rolling Baits each day, taking a total of 67 fish topped by a 48lb 12oz mirror.
“I noticed that the fish were spooking off big beds of baits so I simply put in a few handfuls of boilies after each couple of fish,” explained the Scunthorpe-based 39-year-old.
“I’m also a fan of long hooklinks because I find I get better pick-ups with them, so I decided to use 1ft long rigs. When I spoke to a couple of the lads who had been struggling they also upped their hooklink size and started catching almost straight away.
The previous week the lake had only produced 150 fish so I certainly wasn’t expecting a session like the one we had. I was like a walking zombie by the end and could do with another holiday just to recover!” he added.
The biggest fish of the week fell to Kev Watson in the form of a 57lb mirror, one of 100 carp he caught from the Old Lake during the trip.
