A mammoth fight lasting over 45 minutes resulted in this 51lb 6oz mirror for John Cooper during a session on RH Fisheries’ The Avenue.
The chunky specimen is the first over the 50lb barrier that the 10-acre Shropshire lake has produced, and bigger baits proved successful for the Coventry-based Pyramid Baits manager.
“I’d been baiting the area purely with my own company’s 20mm PP60 boilies. Most of the other anglers on the lake use smaller baits, so the big boilies give the carp something different to deal with and I definitely think it helps select the larger fish,” said the 60-year-old.
The tactic has certainly worked well for John, and this is now the third fifty caught from the RH Fisheries portfolio of waters.
“I knew fish had been regularly visiting the spot, as there was a really clean firm area amid the silkweed where they’d been feeding. There have been carp showing over the last month but they have mostly been the smaller fish, so I think the lake’s bigger residents have only just started to wake up.
“Bizarrely, I was actually considering packing up and going home, as I wasn’t feeling well – then I had the take. I was absolutely shattered by the end of the fight. It was hard to take it all in really,” he added.
John’s winning set-up consisted of a 12ins Cortland Micron hooklink, which was knotless-knotted to a size 6 Nash Fang Twister hook with a 1.5oz lead on a safety clip.
