England had to settle for silver at the 2011 World Carp Classic after a competition record haul of 832lb by the German pairing of Jens Gassen and Thomas Muller saw them walk away with the £10,000 cash prize.
This was enough to comfortably see off the English duo of Dan Moorcroft and Colin Gray who banked 273lb of carp and the third place team of Gabriel Popa and Ion Nitu from Romania with 226lb.
The 260 competitors from 27 different countries had to endure high winds and torrential rain during the week long event which saw a total of 123 fish caught, six of which were over 50lb and 38 over 40lb with an average weight of 30lb-plus.
Although they were a fair way off the winning weight Ultima-backed Dan and Colin were delighted with their silver medal and £2,000 cash prize: “To be up on stage and to hear our national anthem playing is one of the proudest moments of our lives.”
Event organiser Ross Honey was impressed with how well the anglers coped with the difficult conditions: "The weather this year was the worst that has ever been experienced in the event. The competitors demonstrated great skill in being able to fish in these conditions.”
