A session targeting big rudd ended in memorable fashion for Darren Clarke when he banked a brace of fish weighing 2lb 3oz and 2lb 5oz during a stint at Alderfen Fisheries near Wroot.
With conditions almost perfect for the finicky species, Darren decided to fish a small feeder with flavoured popped-up red maggots over a bed of hemp and casters during a quick overnight session on the North Lincolnshire fishery.
“Alderfen’s big rudd have become a lot harder to catch over the years, so I thought I’d get an early season session in to try to surprise them,” said Darren.
“I’d been baiting a patch in open water for a while and the fish seemed to have settled over it well,” added the Thorne-based rod, whose bigger fish fell just 2oz shy of his personal best for the species.
It isn’t the first time that Darren has landed an elusive beast from the popular complex ¬ he has caught bream to 12lb 6oz, perch to 2lb 15oz and roach to 1lb 10oz on previous trips to Alderfen.
“It’s a great complex that is home to some really big fish. My targets now are a 2lb roach and a 3lb perch from the fishery. They may be few and far between, but I know they’re definitely in there,” he added.
