A single run can often turn a bad day’s angling into a memorable one, as William Haugh found out when he latched into this 26lb Loch Fad pike just as he was about to pack up.
After struggling for bites on deadbait tactics, the Prestwick-based rod made a last-gasp change to his rig by popping up a smelt and was instantly rewarded with the personal-best specimen.
“The bottom was full of weed and I’d sat there for hours without getting a bite. I thought popping a bait up might help the fish see my offering a bit better, and it worked a treat. It wasn’t the most pleasant of days, but the fish made the session more than worthwhile,” explained William.
